Connecting More Fully at HMC:

►Christian Formation Retreat: Saturday September 22, 10-4PM. What if Christ calls us to actually impact the world in which we live? What if Christ considers us to be on mission right here in Houston, where we live, work, and play? Believing this might just change everything! Deepen your sense of identity in Christ and ministry through dialogue, discernment, and prayerful times of solitude at this retreat. This is designed as a guided time for individuals to spend connecting with Jesus and what Jesus is up to in our city.  It’s been said that we must “believe the future into being” through prayer and community. Come and learn to believe Jesus’ future for you. $10 per person; everything’s provided.

Please register with Pastor Marty, retreat facilitator. Hmcpastor1@sbcglobal.net, or 713-835-9436
Retreat will be in Cypress at Linda W’s house.

Registration is open to the first 10 people.

Twelve Scriptures Project
By Pastor Marty Troyer

On Sunday we began the exciting process of discerning 12 Foundational Scripture texts that declare who we are and long to be. Texts that, if taken seriously and embraced, have the capacity to transform. Texts that if rediscovered will call  us into a future that God desires. Texts that pull our heart strings, while also pulling us toward Christ and lives that reflect Jesus life in our world.

Started in Sunday School; everyone was  and is invited to participate with us. You might want to know how? A great question! First, you can participate by discerning your own 12 Foundational Scripture texts. Make your own list, keeping in mind that there is an element of “favorites” involved in this, but it is more than this as well. It speaks to those texts that have formed us, and that we want to form us. I encourage each of our households to do this on your own. And yes! Share them with us. Either email them to Marty or better yet…

Second, join us at 9:30 this Sunday AM and bring your list with you. Then help us process the 12 Foundational Texts FOR HOUSTON MENNONITE. Together, we’re selecting 12 texts that define and call us. This is the exciting part, to go from a long list, and narrow it down to the really core texts. We’ve begun the process already. Below are the texts we as a church came up with on Sunday August 19 in the Sunday School hour. But you might have something to add. In fact, I hope you do! So write your own list, then join us as we create one for us all! We categorized our texts based on the Bible Story categories we used in our summer worship series.

Creation Story

Creation story

The Fall

Romans 3:23 For all have fallen short of the glory of God.

God’s Solution: Israel

Image of the Peaceable Kingdom: Isaiah 2 swords into plowshares and Isaiah 11 lions living with lambs.

Psalm 28 – Wait on the Lord

*Micah 6:8 Act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with your God

*Jeremiah 29: Seek the peace of the city where you live

*Psalm 23

Imagery throughout OT and NT of God being a “light in the darkness.” Isaiah 9

Psalm 19

Exodus and God saving people from Empire

God’s Solution: Jesus

Magnificat: Mary’s song in Luke 1 which is kind of Jesus’ agenda in life.

*John 3:16

*Matthew 5 – 7: Sermon on the Mount

Gospels: Jesus crucified and resurrected (We would want to select a core text to symbolize)

Matthew 28: Great Commission

Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbor as yourself.

Age of the Church

Romans 12:2- Be transformed by the renewing of your minds

I John: The greatest commandment is Love

The * indicates texts suggested by more than one group. Some folks were ready to say they are ready to have these 4 texts included (which doesn’t mean they are included, just that some of us really like them!): John 3:16, Sermon on the Mount, Matthew 25 parable of the sheep and goats, and Micah 6:8.

PLEASE consider joining us each of the next THREE Sundays at 9:30 for open dialogue on choosing 12 Foundational Stones from God’s word. We’ll also be using time in worship to move us into this discussion. The 9:30 hour will be more dialogue based, the 10:45 time will be more introspective.
