by Freda RajotteO Lord, I don’t want to be a spectator
A tour passenger looking out upon the real world,
An audience to poverty and want and
homelessness.
Lord, involve me– call me–
Implicate me– commit me–
And Lord– help me to step off the bus.
Bible Study/Outreach (BSO)
Starting October 2 and continuing into next summer, the group will continue the process of exploring and living into the church vision statement. Through service and outreach, we will apply the insights gained from study, prayer, and fellowship. Together, we will step off the bus! We will begin by studying the book of Acts. We will also plan an outreach activity at least once a month. This group will meet weekly, usually at the church, on Sunday nights starting with a meal at 6.30 and finishing by 8.30 pm. All are welcome, especially visitors. For more information, please contact Paul Kelly – 713-472-3465.
Sewers and Doers Group
A small group meets once a month to make arts-and-crafts items for the Relief Sale. Each person is asked to bring a covered dish to share for lunch after church. Beverages and a salad are provided. One need not have to be talented or artistic to attend. There are plenty of easy projects that are planned and just need to be completed. Young people and children are welcome to participate. These crafts sell very well and we need as many as possible.
Discipleship Team
We encourage HMC participants to be true disciples of Jesus Christ in their daily lives by offering spiritual development and educational opportunities for children, youth and adults. Our regular Sunday School hour starts at 9.30 am and lasts until 10.30 am. In the summer months, an innovative and varied Intergenerational Sunday School class involving all ages is offered which looks at the many possibilities for stewardship in our increasingly global world. During the subsequent worship service, Children’s Church takes place in a separate room for children who are of kindergarten age and younger. Periodically, all school aged children and younger are invited to participate in the “Children’s Sonshine Choir.” Annually, the team determines a project for the childrens’ offerings; in the past, MCC (Mennonite Central Committee) has received funds earmarked for worldwide relief which were collected by the children for their “Penny Power” project. The church library is also a responsibility of the Discipleship Team as are the coordination of Vacation Bible School and Children’s camps, as needed.
Exploring Intentional Community
The goals of this group are to explore the idea of intentional community and grow in relationships with each other. We’ll be reading Community and Growth by Jean Vanier. David Jansen, a Mennonite who lives in an intentional community in Illinois, writes: “Community and Growth is the kind of book to be read, reread, contemplated, savored, discussed, and pondered over and over again. Chapters on unity, covenant, mission, growth, nurture, authority, gifts for community, welcome, meetings, everyday living, and celebrations are all loaded with rich nuggets of truth that bring tears, shouts, and sighs to one’s spirit. Everyone considering community should read this book first, and every community should read this book together.” This group will meet weekly, and a copy of the book costs $15. We will gather in homes on Wednesday nights from 6.30 – 8.30 pm. For more information, contact Tim Barr.
